Apple’s three new iPhones, expected at its September 12 event, might be called the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone Edition, according to one closely watched Apple blog.
It makes sense for a number of reasons.
Until now, reports had used Apple’s traditional naming mechanisms to assume Apple would name its new iPhones the iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus and iPhone 8. That’s logical, since Apple typically upgrades its iPhones with an “s” model on a tick-tock cycle.
Those names wouldn’t make sense next year, however, when Apple would presumably have to launch an iPhone 8s, iPhone 8s Plus and an iPhone 9. It’s just too convoluted.
9to5Mac says at least two case-makers at the IFA trade show in Berlin have revealed that Apple will call the iPhones the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone Edition.
The iPhone Edition is expected to be the most high-end iPhone with a screen that takes over almost the entire front of the phone. It’s the device that, until now, has been referenced as the iPhone 8.
It’s confusing for sure, and the final answer to what Apple will call its new iPhones won’t be clear until September 12. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
