Amazon said on Tuesday that its Amazon Echo units can now serve as a multi-room speaker system.
If you own more than one Echo, Echo Dot or Echo Show, you can ask all of them to play the same song in multiple rooms. Or, if you prefer, you can ask each one to play a different one.
Amazon enables this by allowing you to create groups of Echoes, which is exactly how Google executes the same function with Google Home.
You might set an Echo and an Echo Dot in your bedroom and an office, for example, and name the group “upstairs.” To play music, just say “Play Bruce Springsteen upstairs.”
The feature will initially work with Amazon Music, iHeartRadio and Pandora, and support for Spotify and SiriusXM is rolling out.
This is a big move against Sonos, which has established itself as the go-to multi-room speaker system. Amazon’s products cost less and offer smarter features, thanks to the Alexa voice assistant, but Sonos still has a leg-up with audio quality.
